San Miguel de Allende

Why we love it

San Miguel is a town built for celebration. The wedding day here has a rhythm nowhere else can match: ceremony in a 300-year-old chapel, a mojiganga parade with giant puppets and a burro carrying tequila through the streets, then dinner in a hacienda courtyard under a ceiling of papel picado.

It is also a genuinely great place to spend four days. Guests who arrive for the wedding leave having bought art, eaten extraordinarily well and walked their feet off on cobblestones.

What to know

San Miguel sits at 6,200 feet. Evenings from November to February are cold enough for wraps and heaters, and the altitude means one margarita does the work of two. The airports are a 90-minute drive; we run coordinated shuttle waves so nobody rents a car.

Church weddings require paperwork months in advance. Most of our couples hold a legal ceremony at home and a symbolic one here.

Signature moments we’ve planned here

• A callejoneada from the Parroquia to dinner, mojigangas and mariachi leading two hundred guests through the streets at dusk.
• A rooftop welcome party with a mezcal tasting table and views over the pink spires.
• A farewell brunch at a vineyard in the hills, with a lavender field for the photos.
